Our 'Cottage Modern' Kitchen is finished!!

posted by: beachlvr on 11.24.2006 at 01:12 pm in Kitchens Forum

Our new kitchen (part of a larger remodel/addition) had it's inagural event on Thanksgiving. Thank you SO much to all of the wonderful members here who gave me so many ideas (mostly through lurking!!) and the confidence to tell our GC exactly what I wanted. I stuck to what I wanted and it turned out even better than I had imagined.

The best part is how the kitchen functions for our family. We have two young children who spend a great deal of time eating, coloring and doing homework at the island. We also have a big dog who has plenty of room to lie down right in my way LOL.

Some details...

Custom cabinets painted BM Super White
Black graite with eased edge (I think) Santa Angelica
Appliances- KA except bev. fridge- GE monogram
Back splash- Durago travertine mini-brick
Sinks- Blanco
Faucets- Grohe Ladylux and ??
Chairs- Target on-line! (and I love them!!)
Pulls & Knobs- CabinetHardwareDesigns on E-Bay (very reasonable and great quality)
Pendant Lights- Lowes

Please feel free to ask any questions if there's anything else you'd like to know. Here's a slideshow if you'd like to see more. Hope the link works. http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l104/jensonsusie/?action=view¤t=1164389840.pbw

My kitchen is done (pics...I hope!)

posted by: jerseygirl06 on 10.25.2006 at 04:30 pm in Kitchens Forum

Hi all, our kitchen was finished in early July but I had a baby a week (!) later and didn't have time to post an update here. Even though I didn't post a lot during our renovation, I loved reading everyone else's posts - they really helped me a lot. Here are the details on the kitchen - hope the photos work as this is the first time I am using PB.

Good luck to all of you who are still going through your renovations!

http://s125.photobucket.com/albums/p74/abigailzandri/

Kitchen is very small - 8x10 not including the fridge and pantry alcove.

Cabinets - KraftMaid, Huntington, Bisque Glaze
Granite - Black Impala
Range and Micro - Frigidaire
Fridge - Amana
DW - Whirlpool
Sink - Don't know! It's SS D-shape.
Faucet - Danze Opulence
Subway Tile - don't know brand, but it's 3x6 subway tile in biscuit crackle finish
Floors - red oak, natural finish
Paint - Walls - Ben Moore Bennington Grey; Trim - Ben Moore Linen White
Windows - Andersen

Total cost - we did our master bath at the same time, so not sure of breakdown between the two, but if I had to guess I would say $35-40K. The kitchen was completely gutted and we had some plumbing and electrical nightmares.

Cheers!

How much does your Rohl farmsink stick out??

posted by: sarahandbray on 10.26.2006 at 12:47 pm in Kitchens Forum

My GC wants to know how far into the room (past the cabinets) the sink sticks out when you install it. How far does yours stick out? He thought it would have to be about 1.5" to be able to cut-out the shape.

Thanks!!
(any more pics are greatly appreciated too!!)

Sarah

RE: show me your DIY painted cabinets (Follow-Up #10)

Mine were thermofoil. So the before is with the laminate peeled off and the ugly mdf underneath. I first washed them down. Then sanded with very fine sand paper. Then primed with behr primer. Then painted with latex. Then glaze with raw umber glaze. One thing that I did was take the cabinet doors down and place them on a cardboard box on top of a lazy susan. Having the doors on top of lazy susans allowed me to turn the cardboard box to reach all sides of the door. Here's the before....

RE: $ saving countertops vs granite (Follow-Up #10)

Crossville has a new tile out, the Character series, that comes in 24 x 24 + bullnose pieces. I think it would make a beautiful countertop: lovely shading & texture, & it's porcelain so it wears like iron. It's designed to take small grout lines. Under $8/sq. ft.

RE: Is there any Formica that 'looks' high end?? (Follow-Up #34)

I really am happy with the look of my laminate. The reason I chose this pattern is because it looked like laminate, not like laminate trying to look like something else. Many people on here have commented to me "it looks like soapstone!" or something like that, which makes me feel like a million dollars!

There was a poster earlier in this thread who mentioned a DIY kitchen with red walls in late 2003/early 2004...I know there were several of us with red/white/black kitchens during that time. Anyways, here are my pictures. I love my laminate!!

It's Wilsonart Graphite Nebula, btw.
