When I lived in CA, the south facing patio was scorchingly hot. DH built a lovely pergola to shade the patio. We used shade cloth on the top to reduce weight and simplify construction.

Now there's an idea. Maybe we all should start one!
The trouble would be finding advertisers. They like to put their ads in publications that show how to use their products. I suppose we could talk the liquor people into it, lol. Or coffee!
Have you ever seen Ready Made? I used to enjoy it but they kept making remarks about how this isn't your mothers what ever and other kind of ageist stuff and I just got sick of it. Too bad cuz a lot of the articles are very good. How to re use, make chairs out of pallets for example. I wrote them a letter explaining that is why i didn't renew my subscription (I was nice about it) but I still get their on line newsletter. It occured to much later that they may have printed my letter which I actually didn't intend so I hope not.
Here is the link to their site.

Thought I'd try totems too and have been collecting for awhile now. Here are my first two. Sure had fun making them and trying all the different combinations.

Even MORE totems

posted by: imjustsam on 06.01.2009 at 01:09 pm in Garden Junk Forum

I promised myself I wouldnt go to my favorite junk store unless I used at least 40 pieces of glass. I had enough doubles of glass to make 2 very similar totems for either side of my arbor. I also used a couple extra pieces in the middle to help me reach my goal.

totems on copper poles

posted by: realrose on 08.11.2008 at 09:56 pm in Garden Junk Forum

Hi everyone. Wanted to show you some totems on poles. I try and make them look like "garden ladies." I was in a show this Saturday. These are pictures at the very end. I should have taken some in the beginning when I had more "junk". I sold 4 dish flowers, 1 mosaiced bowling ball and 1 totem. Was very pleased. This is only the second time I've done a show. My First Totem

I really enjoyed making this for my garden. It didn't take long and only cost about $4 to make. It looks nice in the butterfly garden. It will look nicer when the flowers start blooming.http://s284.photobucket.com/albums/ll10/sleer8/gardenweb/?action=view&current=P3041664.jpg

Amber Glass Garden Totem on Porch Post

Here is my favorite big Glass Garden totem so far. It took awhile (and maybe a bit too much $$) to get the right glass for this one, but I think it was worth it! I just hope it doesn't get swiped. Kathy

My latest glass garden totems

posted by: luckygal on 05.18.2009 at 03:32 pm in Garden Junk Forum

Have been busy all week trying to reduce my stash of glass and made 5 totems (plus the two little ones in my fairy garden which are on a separate thread). These vary from 32" to 48" in height.

The quality of the pics isn't the best but it started to rain so I rushed it.

The one totem isn't finished as it was the last one and really needs embellishing. Have to find some glass bits for it.

Here's my slideshow link:

Rainbow Totem

posted by: tasymo on 02.15.2009 at 03:36 pm in Garden Junk Forum

Hello Gang!
I haven't posted anything in a while, so I thought I'd share the Totem I made this Winter while the weather was cold and gray. I wanted to use all the main colors of the rainbow, in their proper order. Finding the right colors in the right sizes and shapes was quite a challenge, which made it all the more fun! The purple was tough, and I wish the piece I found was brighter, but it is what it is! Enjoy! Kathy
