How to decorate christmas tree, beads ribbons etc

posted by: newfielou on 11.25.2014 at 10:34 pm in Crafts and Decorations Forum

I am trying to decide how to decorate my tree this year. I have seen some strands of beads this year that look beautiful. But I know too that only beads strung may look a bit bare. I have some sprays bought too this year sparkly red and cranberries. I also bought a narrower ribbon 3". the last few years I had the wide ribbon and billowed it throughout the tree. Looking for a change. Would it be too much for ribbon sprays and beads? Ribbon and beads gold, sprays red.

Height Christmas tree for 9 foot ceiling

posted by: newfielou on 11.02.2014 at 10:09 pm in Home Decorating & Design Forum

I am moved into a house with 9 foot ceilings. I want to buy an artificial tree. I'm not sure what size to buy. Everyone I know has 8 foot ceilings with 7.5 foot trees. I think the 7.5 foot will look too short. I know someone with 8 foot ceilings with a 6.5 foot tree and it looks so short. I know a 9 foot would not allow me to have a topper. I can't find anything between 7.5 and 9.

How to light up backyard.

posted by: newfielou on 10.13.2014 at 06:57 pm in Landscape Design Forum

I have a private backyard and I have a lot of windows on the back of my house and currently unsure what to do with drapes, but in the night time I hate not being able to see out. It makes me wary seeing all the black windows. My backyard goes back about 20 feet then hits a retaining wall about 4 feet tall then a have a steep hill going up to a large garage. Theres a road going along the side my house up to that garage.
Looking for suggestions. Thanks

Where to end backsplash?

posted by: newfielou on 09.09.2014 at 06:29 pm in Kitchens Forum

My counter top is 2 inches wider than the cabinet. I came home to this and it caught my eye right away. He has is flush with the cabinet. I find though the angle that you come into the kitchen the backsplash looks like it much farther in than the cabinet. What do you think? He has to come back tomorrow to finish.

What to do with drapes?

posted by: newfielou on 08.24.2014 at 08:32 am in Home Decorating & Design Forum

I have three large windows in my living room that are grouped together. They're about 34"x70" with maybe 10" between them. The top trim is wide and beautiful so I don't want to cover it. I was thinking about buying a rod to go across all three windows. Not sure how to place it. Higher than the top trim or below. I have the same problem to the left of this photo. I have a bay window that's in a room 10'wide. I may put Roman shades there. I don't know if I should go with the same pattern or complementing one. The Bay window is a foot away from the living room windows so they're fairly close.

Backsplash in kitchen

posted by: newfielou on 08.14.2014 at 10:42 am in Kitchens Forum

I have a slide in stove with microwave above it. I was thinking about putting the "framed" tiling look above the stove but I am unsure if the area is big enough. I have a tile picked out that I can get the pencil tile and a smaller basket weave look tile that matches to put in the "frame". Every picture I see thay have a beautiful large space above the stove with a fancy fan. Also, if I decide not to do this, I was thing of putting a stainless steel backsplash just behind the stove, 36" and do the rest in tile. I am thinking either tumbled travertine or marble. Thanks guys

Calamondin indoor tree

posted by: newfielou on 07.18.2014 at 02:49 pm in Citrus Forum

I have a indoor potted tree. It's doing really well there's about 30 fruit at two different stages and now there's over a hundred flower buds emerging. It's about two an a half feet tall. I read you should hand pollinate which I've been doing but last round of flowers a few when I went to pollinate a few petals fell off and I could see there was already a fruit inside. I've since read other places you don't need to hand pollinate. What's correct? Also I read somewhere that leaves that are curled like a boat are stressed. My plant seems to be thriving but there are several leaves like this. I have only fertilized once with miracle grow that's for houseplants. I have ordered dr earth organic 9 which isn't here yet. It seems like a few days after I feed it the mass of flower buds came out. I do have it in a window which gets the sun most the day. Is this a good brand fertilizer? Thanks I will post pictures

Is this a sampling? What kind?

posted by: newfielou on 06.22.2014 at 07:55 pm in Trees Forum

There are about a hundred of these starting from the ditch going up the sides of my driveway. There are a scattered Birch in the area but not too close. They are everywhere. I posted these pictures on the weeds forum thinking that's what they were. Someone suggested they were trees. I'm not sure if I should pull them or not as in some of the areas I actually want trees to grow. What do you think? I live in eastern Canada.

The photo is not the best because there is no close-up but from what I see it looks like poison ivy. You can buy poison ivy killer at Home Depot or Lowes. My yard has tons of it and I save the ivy killer for the established vines. For these little guys I take a garden spade to get rid of them.

Fridge with or without ice/water dispenser? In door icemake or in

posted by: newfielou on 04.28.2014 at 02:08 am in Appliances Forum

I am looking to buy a new fridge. I am getting a french door fridge. I had decided on either a Samsung or LG french door 36" with ice/water dispenser. LG has the slim space plus icedispenser that has all the ice making in the door itself saving shelf space or the samsung which the icemaker is on the top shelf of the fridge but there are shelves in the door.
I was trying to decide between these and all I've read is complaints about ice makers breaking. I've never had a fridge like this before. I also have hardwood in my kitchen so the thought of a leak scares me. But I love the convinience of one though. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks

Pine tree losing needles on bottom branches

posted by: newfielou on 04.09.2014 at 09:23 pm in Trees Forum

There is still a lot of snow around my trees but I noticed that the bottom branches have lost their needles. I bought 5 ft pine tree last summer and had it planted. The branches were almost touching the ground and were nice and full. There is still a couple feet of snow and I guess the branches I can see are the second row of branches up and there looks to be hardly any needles left. They are hard to get at with the snow. I will try to get to it and take a photo to post. The soil is wet in the area. I lost a spruce last fall. It turned yellow and died. There are springs uphill from this area. I have planted 6 trees but it seems the flow of water went right to the tree that died. Im worried this is the cause of my pine losing its needles and that this one too will die. What can I plant here in wet soil? Trees are too expensive to keep buying and paying to get planted.

Silver Fox or Abalone paint for new home

posted by: newfielou on 04.09.2014 at 06:31 pm in Paint Forum

I have to choose a paint for the porch and main bath. The bathroom is 5.5 x.5.5ft with one piece bathtub surround on one wall and vanity and toilet on opposite wall with NO window. I'm planning on buying 3 light fixture for above the vanity. The vanity is chestnut with a white/grey/taupe granite top. And the tile on floor is a light gray.
The porch has a medium grey tile and full glass door with side lights and transom, so lots of natural light.
I find online the pictures are deceiving as abalone looks almost offwhite to me. My concern is silver fox being too dark in the bathroom. Right now they just have a 1 lightbulb hanging out of the wall so the lighting is darker than what I plan to have. Both colors look great with the tiles. I'll try to post all the colors I have going on. I'm afraid the abalone will look too pale in the porch and the silver fox too dark in the bathroom. Its an upcharge to get both colors and not really an option for me.
I have attached the countertop color.

Dark interior doors with off white trims

I am building and my hardwood is dark as well as my kitchen cabinets. My island will be a off white/.cream and my countertops and backsplash will be cream as well. I am wondering if I should just go all white with doors and trim or go with white trim and dark doors. See photo. Our house is open concept with lots of windows.

mix or have same tile for bathroom flooring and shower

posted by: newfielou on 03.25.2014 at 10:42 am in Bathrooms Forum

I am wondering if I should buy the same tile for the flooring and shower. I have a 36x60" shower stall with glass doors. And a double vanity in espresso with a mixed grey/beige/light brown/charcoal mix granite countertop. I was thinking about going with a grey tile with a small lighter grey stripey longer tile for a border at eye level. The base is white acrylic. The flooring company said to go with all the same tile. But Im unsure. The grey is more of a brown grey that is not light but not really dark in color. What do you think? The tiles are 12x24. Im wondering to will I go vertical or horizontal...hmmmm

Bathroom- tiling floor and walkin shower..use same tile or not

posted by: newfielou on 03.11.2014 at 07:42 pm in Bathrooms Forum

I am building new and trying to figure out what to do with the tiling. We will have a 60 x 36 walkin corner shower. The vanity is espresso with a granite top, see image. Im trying to figure out what color to go with for my tiles and whether or not to go with the same throughout or change it up. We are going with the larger rectangular tile,12x24. What do you think? Feeling overwhelmed...:(

Building new home- what hardwood to buy?

posted by: newfielou on 03.10.2014 at 11:31 pm in Flooring Forum

I have picked out my kitchen cabinets. They are a espresso color and my island is a cream color. Countertops cream specked. I know dark shows dents and harder to keep clean. I was thinking about a walnut color
http://www.wickhamhardwood.com/Domestic-Floor/maple/en.aspx

in walnut. This is real hardwood. It was also suggested to me wire scratched hardwood in a similar color. And also a charcoal stained oak that has the gloss finish. I really like the oak look where its a charcoal stain the swirls in the wood look neat. But it may be too dark and because of the gloss show dents very easy.
It is all open concept so a lot of hardwood. What do you think?
