Mixing countertop materials...

posted by: lafacia on 12.28.2011 at 04:34 pm in Kitchens Forum

Anyone have soapstone (or something else) on perimeter and marble on island - or some other similar combination? My inspiration kitchen has soapstone on perimeter white cabinets and carrara marble on med/dark stain wood island. I'd love to see more pictures of this combination. I really want marble but I am thinking the cooking areas might be safer (my family and extended family will be hard on this kitchen) in a different material. And since I really like contrast (it shows up in most of my favorite kitchen pics) I think I'll like it. Just worried about it being too busy. Photos anyone? Thanks!

Hi all.

A huge thank you to everybody on this forum who helped graciously with advice, photos, experience & info. What an incredible resource this is. Shout outs to Erikanh & marthavila for hood help, willowdecor for tile, all the stoners, and many more.

We moved in last week-bottom trim on fridge & dw are still missing, excuse the messy bottoms.

I'll be happy to provide details if anyone wants them.

Thanks for looking!

Does Gardenweb have a favorite white paint kitchen cab color?

posted by: threeapples on 02.26.2012 at 08:18 pm in Kitchens Forum

We want our cabinets to look historic, but still very nice. We plan to have our inset beaded cabinets glazed lightly. The cabinets go all the way to the ceiling and will meet a dentil molding. What color is best for this? The backsplash will likely be a 2 x 4 carrera marble subway tile and we haven't chosen the counters yet. Any suggestions for a white that isn't too stark, but isn't cream or ivory either? thanks!

RE: 4 drawer banks with shaker style--flat or pieced? (Follow-Up #21)

posted by: artemis78 on 01.30.2010 at 03:04 pm in Kitchens Forum

For what it's worth, we've found in our cabinet hunt that all-slab is cheaper, too. Not a huge amount---under $1,000---but for us that's ten percent of our overall cabinet budget, and it equals the markup for painted v. wood or inset v. frameless with one of the shops we're looking at. So, another factor to throw into the mix!

(All else being equal we will do pieced for the large pot drawers and slab for the smaller drawers---probably splitting it above and below 6" depending on how the measurements shake out.)

Questions for Beaded Inset Cabinet Owners

posted by: dad4diy on 04.28.2013 at 12:53 am in Kitchens Forum

We are about to finally do a kitchen remodel and I need to choose a custom cabinet maker for our painted white beaded face frame cabinets. However, I am hearing opposing viewpoints from different craftsmen. If anyone has any experience or knowledge about these questions, I would appreciate it:

1. Some cabinetmakers have a beaded edge that is integrated into the frame itself using a special machine. Essentially, the frame is "one piece". Others glue and nail a separate little bead strip on the frame. I have been told that the integrated type of bead limits the width of the rails and stiles. I have also been told that the separate bead method might show more cracking in a painted cabinet because of the additional joint. Any wisdom to which method is superior?

2. We want to use the exposed barrel style hinges. I have been warned that once mounted, these hinges offer very little adjustment compared to the hidden European style hinge. Anybody have problems with the exposed barrel style hinge down the road?

3. Lastly, are there preferred or "normal" widths for rails and stiles on face frames of inset cabinets?

Thanks,
Matt

show pics of the best part of your island

What is your favorite part of your island?

What would you change?

Did you do all drawers?

I am also interested in islands with an overhang. I want to slide a kitchen table under the overhang for seating. Then I can pull it out when we need more seating.

Thanks, Peke

What do you store in your kitchen drawers?

posted by: Mom23Es on 03.07.2012 at 10:28 pm in Kitchens Forum

I'm trying to make sure I have a good balance between cabinets and drawers in my new kitchen. In my current little kitchen I hardly have any drawers and none of them are the larger kind. I'm so excited to get BIG drawers that I feel like I might be a bit over zealous about it. I also know that all these special cabinets cost more than just a plain cabinet.

So, what do you put in your kitchen drawers? The big ones and little ones?

I Finished my White Zen Kitchen!

posted by: celineike on 07.10.2011 at 05:17 pm in Kitchens Forum

Ahhhh, it's good to be done.
What fun this whole process has been!
Here's the low down.

We had a slab leak in February. The entire downstairs had wood floors and water had been leaking into them for weeks/months? we don't know. But long enough that the walls and cabinets were wet as well. So they gutted and we got to work.
Our old kitchen was a dark place for me. We have north facing window and the light was always dim. We also had light wood cabinets and dark greenish black granite (Uba Tuba?) on the counters, island and backsplash!!!! ugh! what a light sucker that was!

I had always known that if we changed the kitchen it would be to white. I know people say timeless doesn't exist in kitchens... but every decade I can think of has had white as an option. So I never thought of this a trendy thing. -til i got here, lol.
Anyway, White cabs and grey counters were the only things I had in mind for sure. The rest fell into place the more I looked around and if you see a part of your kitchen in here... THANK YOU!!!! I stole SO many details from GWer's.

Details...
Apparently we have a small kitchen,lol... didn't think so til i got here either, it's 13'x12'

Counters.... Qortstone perimeters in Cemento
Island & Bar is Statuary Marble
Butcher Block on Island.... oiled Dark Walnut End-Grain 18"x38"
Cabinets .... shaker, inset, framed
Paint on Cabs ...BM Cloud White
Paint on Walls ... BM Smokey Taupe
Hardware is mostly RH & Rejuvenation for the Latches (way worth that investment!) All Polished Nickel
Island now measures 38"x 84"
walkways are 38" on sink side; 42" on oven side; and 36" on fridge side... all plenty wide, i was worried about pushing these measurements.
Bluestar RNB 36"
Proline 36" Hood
Sharp MW Drawer
Kenmore Elite French door Fridge
Fisher & Paykel Dish Drawer Washer
Sink.. Krauss 33" double Bowl Stainless
Main Faucet is Hansgrohe Pull Down PN

I'll post some more pics of fun details. Things i liked seeing from other's kitchens and ended up adding to mine.

At one point, I had chosen everything and had a huge set back of worry that the whole thing would be boring instead of calm and bright and peaceful. Thank you all for your encouragement and opinions on various choices and ideas. This is such great forum with wonderful people.
I love how my kitchen turned out!
