Photos of Fireplace mantle painted dark with light wall

posted by: beekeeperswife on 07.19.2010 at 02:16 pm in Home Decorating Forum

I think I've found my "gravender" (Dior Gray BM-2133-40), and I'm going to paint the wall with the fireplace a shade lighter, Pigeon Gray (nice name, huh?).

So, I'm thinking about painting the fireplace a dark charcoal gray to contrast agains the pigeon, (I have to laugh when I type that). Where you see the tile surrounding the fireplace, I want to put in marble with gray veining--either tiles or slab pieces cut to fit. As a disclaimer, that window that is sideways with the mirror on the back is covering the hideous fireplace that is there, might be painting the yellow brass with black high heat paint to just black it out, or will replace it.

OR, am I making a big mistake since some of the cabinets in the kitchen side are white, do I need that fireplace to be the same color to help balance out the room? The couch and rug are white.

Anybody have any photos of dark fireplaces against a lighter wall?

Here's the wall as it is now:

Living Room Pics - Added Game Table, Where to Put Rug

posted by: kiko on 07.14.2010 at 06:43 pm in Home Decorating Forum

I posted this living room back before Thanksgiving when I was debating replacing some large leather chairs I had (I can't find the old post/pics though). I have since sold those too big/too traditional chairs and added a game table with 4 smaller leather chairs.

Hopefully we will use this room more if it has more functions. Maybe one day it will be the "hang out" area for the kids (who are 7 and 4 now); although we would probably have to add a TV too?? We literally only use it at Christmas. It seems like a waste!

Our 9 x 12 rug is out being cleaned. Should I put it back in this room? If yes, should I try to center it in the room or put it under one of the "areas". The room is 15 by 17.

I also need to work on accessories and art placement. I haven't really moved anything yet. Anyway, any opinions are welcome (I always enjoy hearing different points of view, it helps tremondously!) on how to make the room better.
