Sorting out finishes for my 'special, unique' kitchen

posted by: breezygirl on 04.29.2011 at 05:19 pm in Kitchens Forum

Since I posted last week about my kitchen being special, unique or memorable, I've been thinking about the visual of my new kitchen. Some of your questions and thoughts about adding personality to the room eat at my brain. I really like some of the suggestions for bringing walnut accents into my kitchen. Plllog suggested running a walnut strip just underneath the countertops similar to this:

End grain walnut abutting marble

and adding walnut pulls on my uppers and walnut bun feet at the bases.

Blfenton suggested a wood top for my peninsula and walnut legs supporting the ends of the peninsula but keep the white cabs.

Then I get tangled up on the countertops and tabletops and how those accents would look considering materials I have already. I'm not sure which material to put where.

Here's my house layout with new mediumish brown (no red or gold) oak floors.

Plan B 30 in. standard fridge, 3 windows 2-27-11

Here are the already established tops for the house. The Dining Room is open to the kitchen with an antique quartersawn oak table so that surface needs to be taken into account. It's a bit more gold than my ideal.

I have picked out Carrara marble as the, or at least some of the, countertops.

Carrara slabs side by side

Here's what I struggle with. I like the idea of a stained wood island as it looks great in this rendering and would hide the wear and tear from little kids. BUT I'm not sure that I want to do it since everyone else seems to be doing it.

Kitchen all white and all Carrara.

Kitchen all white cabs and Carrara

Kitchen with darker island.

For the countertops, I'm not sure I want Carrara on all the surfaces. I cook a lot and with all the marble-etching goodies I can. The island is my primary prep surface so I thought about a different surface there. I really like the warmth a wood top would bring, but I have a silgranit prep sink in the island so I hesitate. Here's how that looks.

Kitchen all white cabs with wood island top

Another surface yet to be determined is the kitchen table with the bench. It could be anything I suppose.

So I need help. You all know I'm exhausted and having trouble making decisions. I'm not sure what my exact questions are. Maybe WWYD if it were your kitchen? Which rendering looks best? How would a walnut strip and other accents look with any of these scenarios? Do I skip the walnut accents? I'm open to hearing anything to help me decide one way or the other.

made in china

posted by: dudziak on 04.06.2005 at 11:58 pm in Furniture Forum

I would like to hear opinions on mid to high end furniture manufacturers moving most or all of their manufacturing operations to China. The companies I am namely talking about are the La-Z-Boy companies; Pennsylvania House,American Drew,Kincaid,La-Z-Boy,Hammery, Clayton Marcus and Furniture Brands International; Drexel Heritage,Henredon,Thomasville,Lane,Broyhill.I have furniture from both corporations and have just picked up a few Pa. House items that were still made in the U.S.A..I do not think I will buy any more of the two corporations furniture now that it is made in China how does everyone else feel?

Has anyone seen the Ballard Designs Cocktail Table in person? I really like the look/lines, but I've never ordered furniture from them before. I'm wondering about the quality.

Thanks,

Show off Your Counter Stools! (please;)

posted by: doonie on 01.02.2011 at 11:31 am in Kitchens Forum

I would love to see what everyone else has chosen for counter height stools in their kitchen. I've decided I need to change mine out for something more comfortable, so please include your comfort rating and brand and if they swivel or not. And why you chose what you did. If you can include a photo of how it fits with your kitchen decor, even better!

Thanks in advance for sharing your stools;))

Can anyone recommend a place to get counter stools? Either in-store or online. I'm in the Bayside, Queens area of NY but can travel to Long Island.

My kitchen is close to being finished. Pics to follow.

Thanks

Kitchen Remodel Recessed Lighting

posted by: babock on 12.02.2010 at 02:42 pm in Lighting Forum

I am remodeling my kitchen and going to get rid of that big out of date fluorescent monstrosity in the center of my kitchen. Going to go with recessed lighting and some pendant lights over an island. My question is what are peoples views of what types of recessed lighting to get. I am thinking about 4" halogens with mr16 bulbs that are 50W apiece but might be suitable for upgrade later with LED when price drops more. Currently, LED fixtures seem ridiculously expensive to me. What are others using these days for kitchen remodels?

Here is a drawing I have showing my proposed light layout. The lights over the island are going to be pendants.

Recommendation for kitchen under cab light

posted by: mtom01 on 11.15.2010 at 01:43 am in Lighting Forum

I like to get some recommendation for the type of light to use for our kitchen under cabinet light.

I have hardwired each cabinet (120v), and I like to stick with 120v without using a transformer and want to go energy efficient.

I look at LED but the price is just too much, all are above $100/ each.

I have seven cabs, starting from smallest, 9"; 12"; 18"; 21" & 2 - 27"and a corner 36" cab.

We are putting in granite countertop & have marble tiles on the floor.

I want to know if flourocent, xenon, or LED will give the best light on to the granite.

I saw some LED's in Lowes , but they do not have any that will accommodate the 9" cab.

Any tips...

Thanks.

Ordering Direct From NC

posted by: mustangsh on 11.10.2010 at 06:11 pm in Furniture Forum

I'm looking to purchase a dining room set from Kincaid. I'm looking on feedback from those who have purchased direct from NC or Lexington, KY. I called Grindstaff and Boyles and I'm looking to save about $2500 (even with shipping) vs buying from a retailer in my area. In the end is it worth dealing with someone out of state for the savings?

I appreciate your help!

What was your best bathroom remodeling decision?

We're having a difficult time making decisions for our bathroom remodel: choice of shower stall, toilet, flooring, counter, and perhaps even a fireplace. This will be the first and only remodel for our bathroom, so we hate to mess up.
Would appreciate any words of wisdom or advice.
What do you regret? What would you change? What was your best decision concerning the bathroom?

RE: Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls? (Follow-Up #15)

posted by: funcolors on 04.16.2009 at 10:03 pm in Paint Forum

What I want is really soothing neutrals, more on the warm side. I love light. My living room isn't dark, but it doesn't get as much light as I'd like. I want light and warmth without being really aware of my walls at all.

I have a small house (just under 1300 sq.ft.) and the living area flows together, so I want a pulled together, peaceful space. I'm not after excitement, drama or a loud statement.

One other thing...if I decide to change my wall color for any reason, I'll also have to repaint the ceiling. That in itself gives me severe pause.

That, my color friend, is your color ThinkMap. Three little paragraphs. From those words multiple color solutions are possible. It really can be that simple.

For grins, you might want to post on the Decorating Forum. Post asking people for their ideas; what specific paint colors do they think will fit with what you are wanting from wall color.

uluvbs perception that white ceilings look unfinished is a valid consideration -- for uluvbs. The practicality of a white ceiling working thru many wall color changes is also a valid consideration -- for linelle. A ceiling is an important part of the box that makes a room. It's a large horizontal plane above our heads. Just by its orientation, not necessarily size, it's in a position to majorly influence how a room can feel and function.

It's important to keep repeating that there are no one-size-fits-all answers when it comes to how to treat ceilings.

How to install a flat screen tv without showing the wire clutter

posted by: vidyaram on 09.24.2010 at 11:08 am in Building a Home Forum

Hi
I have seen some houses where the tv is installed over the fireplace and the cable box, satellite receiver, dvd player are all in a closet or cabinet in a corner without the wire clutter. I will have my tv on a wall and can have a tv cabinet under the tv itself or in a corner cabinet. I don't want the clutter to be shown in the room. I am meeting with a whole house audio video installer for my new construction and want to be prepared because I am clueless on this subject. I am not very interested in the whole house audio but if I could have one DVR shared by multiple tvs in the house, it will be great. Please give your suggestions

What color kitchen cabinets with white countertops/grey floor?

posted by: jdf on 09.10.2010 at 07:16 pm in Kitchens Forum

We are going with Caesarstone Blizzard and a lightish grey floor (American Olean St. Germain Gris). What color should the cabinets be? We don't want to go too dark. Also, any backsplash suggestions? We like the glass mosaics, but not sure how to tie it all together.

Coastal, breezy, plantation, West Indies?

posted by: myjodi on 02.20.2007 at 06:33 am in Home Decorating Forum

I need help with my MB decor. It is off of the great room and therefore, I do want to pay attention to "flow" however, I also want to go a slightly different direction (so as to be exciting and fresh). My great room (ie, living, dining, kitchen) are in shades of gold, fawn, honey, etc. with red and chocolate accents. We have antique cream kitchen cabinets and dark walnut furniture (LR, DR, MB). We also have medium tone Brazilian Cherry hardwood flooring in the great room and MB. I've painted the "head wall" (the wall you face when you enter the MB) a deep and striking Mediterannien Blue/Turqoise, the other three walls are a chai tea color - you know, a dark "tan" with a hint of oranginess to it (I can post actual colors on next posting if necessary). I'm wanting to keep with the West Indies-ish feel that I've created in the other areas of the house, but also want to maximize on the ISLANDY (read, beach) part of the West Indies decor, as opposed to the FRENCH COLONIAL/Tropical print part of the decor (like in aforementioned greatroom). So, has anyone seen any coastal, breezy, lazy, cool (yet warm) BR decor anywhere (either in your house or elsewhere)that might provide some inspiration? Suggestions and referrals would be great. Otherwise, I will post pictures and see if any of you "experts" want to start from scratch with me... :) You are all so great! Very inspirational.

White Cabinets with White Countertops?

posted by: pugrolls on 06.18.2010 at 04:31 pm in Kitchens Forum

Hello, wonderful GWers,

Of all the funny things, DH is now totally in love with the white cabinet/espresso island look. (Despite throwing hissy fits early in the planning process about how much he HATES white cabinets. Yes. He actually typed "HATES" in all capital letters when we were emailing about the kitchen design). In any event, I am delighted by this development and am going to run with it. So now the question becomes, what countertop?

I love love love the look of white carrera marble on white cabinets, but DH wants to go with something more bulletproof. So, OK. Does anyone have or have photos of white cabinets with white countertops other than marble? White quartz, maybe? I would love to see them, thanks!

But just to drool over marble a little....
