Peppermint? or weed?

posted by: LilyD74 on 06.10.2013 at 06:04 am in Name That Plant Forum

Two of these seedlings came up in my mint box, where I planted peppermint seeds last year but nothing sprouted. When I saw the first few leaves, I thought they were mints of some kind because they were in groups of four around the stem, like mint - however, as you can see, the later leaves are in groups of five or even six. It does have mint's branching habit, however.

So what do you think? Thanks!

NOTES:

Galium species.

NOTES:

Asparagus Fern/Asparagus densiflorus sprengeri
Nellie, if this plant is hardy where you are, it's likely horribly invasive

Plant or Weed?

posted by: smvala on 06.29.2013 at 09:00 am in Name That Plant Forum

Can someone tell me if this is a plant or a weed and if it is a plant, what is it?

NOTES:

Yellow Nutsedge or similar species?

Which would make it a very aggressive weed in most books.

Weed or Flower?

posted by: farmboy1 on 06.29.2013 at 12:17 am in Name That Plant Forum

So I've been watching this plant grow and grow, but it doesn't flower. Is it a weed or eventually a worthwhile flower? Comments appreciated!

vince

NOTES:

Don't listen to ken. Solidago is an important wildlife plant - it's foliage feeds insects that become food for baby birds. I loved watching the wrens pluck green caterpillars off it last year to feed their babies.
Late summer blooms offer nectar at a time when it is really needed and then tiny seeds feed songbirds all winter. And the sweep of yellow flowers is gorgeous in a big stand.

This is likely the more aggressive one (there are non-aggressive ones) in which case it will spread by runners (and you can see that if you pull it up).

If you have room for it, it is good to leave it. If you have a small or tightly controlled garden (like ken) then it may be too aggressive for you.

Does not cause allergies as the heavy pollen is transported by insects, not the wind.

What kind of plant is this?

posted by: bradb1974 on 07.01.2013 at 09:21 pm in Name That Plant Forum

It smells like an herb. Like something between mint and anise, but it doesn't look like either. The stalk is a dark color with small white hairs on it. I have more pics if needed.

NOTES:

It looks to me like some type of weedy mugwort/Artemesia.

Here's another view.

NOTES:

Probably Lonicera maackii. An invasive weed if it is.
