Thanks again! (Follow-Up #14)

posted by: scottyboipdx on 08.11.2010 at 02:04 pm in Cottage Garden Forum

Thanks again, everyone. I agree, I'd like to add some winter interest (a small tree or evergreen) but haven't been able to find anything that would work on our site (extremely narrow and steeply sloped) and conditions (really inconsistent light) buy maybe I'll look into it again as we head into fall. I really wanted a witch hazel for a while, but once mature, it could easily overwhelm the space. You can't actually see it yet, but there is a Tiger Eye Sumac planted toward the middle of the bed, which in future years, should get 6-8' tall and give some good winter interest. I was thinking a Golden Catalpa tree, pollarded every spring, would give good color and some winter interest...what do you all think? We originally wanted to plant trees in the parking strips on both sides of the house, but unfortunately, the neighborhood gas line goes right under our front strip (only 18" below the surface) so trees there are out of the question, we may be doing a raised bed there in the future. On the side strip, we planted 2 Persian Ironwoods last fall as part of the Friends of Trees program in our city.

BTW...here are the plans I have for the front garden, I'm still looking for the ones for the side garden. It may be a little hard to read at this size, if you click on it, it'll go to my flickr site where you can get a bigger version if you like.

Front Garden

Janepa...you defnitely should get a Joe Pye...they are spectacular and such great plants for attracting insects. What kind of crocosmia did you get? They are great plants!

Garden Pictures 2010

posted by: reginaz on 07.08.2010 at 03:33 pm in Cottage Garden Forum

It is so hot and with no rain in the past month, not only is the grass fried but so are many perennials and shrubs, some that I've had for many years. I took these pictures in May June.
In the middle of July 2009 my deer fence fell down and not only did the deer come in every day but kept doing so all winter and through this spring. We put up a new fence and a new deer fence above the picket fence and they still got in! We figured out they were jumping over the gate so every night we have to put up something to block this little space. Yikes! Also my arbor with William Baffin fell over as did my arbor with my silver lace vine, well actually, it rotted away (lasted 20 years).

Here is the path coming into my yard

Powdery Mildew

posted by: northspruce on 07.09.2005 at 10:53 am in Far North Gardening Forum

Reporting back on a previous topic... I think it was Sierra posted awhile back to use baking soda and water to control Powdery Mildew (of which there is a LOT this year!) and I said maybe not on roses due to sodium content.

Since then I found a recommendation for exactly that on the ARS website so I figured it must be safe and gave it a shot. It is working GREAT so far. Even after being washed off in 2 hours by a thunderstorm. I reapplied it the next day just in case. Roses and delphiniums responding well so far.

The solution is:
16 oz spray bottle
1/8 tsp baking soda
few drops of dishsoap
fill with water

There's also the milk and water method which I have not tried but I hear is effective.

Roses August 2007

posted by: sazzyrose on 08.09.2007 at 10:08 pm in Far North Gardening Forum

I have some new bloomers to post.
FJ Grootendorst. I moved it again this spring. This time all of the dirt came off and I got to see the roots. They are so twisted around itself that it will eventually choke.
AAH, now that I see the picture bigger, this one has an aphid problem. I should go take care of that.

Rugelda- I thought I had lost the two of these. They took so long to come back from the bottom. But looking at them now you would never know it.

I've posted these before but they are putting on a really nice show now.
The Hunter is just starting it's rebloom. I love this rose.

A couple of my Bucks are also putting on a nice show. Now that Cedar Hollow is no longer shipping, I do not know exactly where I am going to find more Bucks roses yet.
Prairie Star

Earthsong. New this year but you wouldn't know it. It is quite vigorous.

Hawkeye Belle- Hard to beat perfection.

Kaleidoscope. I missed all of the first blooms when I was at the lake in July. The coloring is so much like Distant Drums. And like DD the color fades fast in the heat and then it turn a light pink.

Spring flush 08: An Extravaganza! (Front yard 1)

posted by: pappu on 07.07.2008 at 02:50 am in Rose Gallery Forum

I have finally some time to post some images. A stellar spring flush and I am still drunk from the incredible show put on by my roses. This year I realised that one should never truely judge a rose until it's third year and I take back all the bad things I said about the austins..a full grown bush in spring flush is truely a revelation. I have literally taken hundreds of pictures and can keep posting forever, but here are some of the pics from the front yard...neon bright colors that can stand up to the blazing south and west sun (the austins and the pastels are all in the east facing backyard)..I have tons of more pics, will keep posting as time permits..Thanks for watching
