Finished Traditional Cream Kitchen

posted by: clergychick on 07.24.2010 at 07:36 pm in Kitchens Forum

I found this forum after most of our decisions were made, so I post my finished kitchen with some trepidation! Some of our choices may put it in the "quirky" catagory, but it's a good kitchen to cook in and fits the style of our home (1987 version of Victorian) and our personal style.

We didn't make many changes to the lay-out which we had lived with for three years and liked.

The mantle/hood is a replica of a mantle in the farmhouse my grandfather grew up in. We originally thought we'd use that mantle, but it was in too bad of shape (house has been empty for years). I want to decorate the shelf better so that there is something interesting to reflect in the mirror: we didn't want a pendant light over the island to block it since it is the focal point of the room.

We started with deconstruction on April 21, and finished on June 27.

I've enjoyed reading this forum as a border-line lurker: this is a good, generous community, and even those of us who do not post as often are enriched by the wealth of experience and expertise shared here. Peace to all. Amy

Please post pictures of your narrow island and work aisles

I am in sticker shock after getting one bid back for my kitchen expansion- over $300/sf for the addition, not including the cabinets and appliances! Hopefully the other bids will come in lower but this bid sent me back to the drawing board to fit my remodel into existing space. I only have a 10'2" wide kitchen/eating are so either it is a peninsula layout or a long kitchen with 24" deep island , 24" sink run, and 36" inch aisles. I prefer the long narrow island because it gives me much more counter and storage space, and we are generally a one cook family. I have left 48" in front of the fridge and the sink so the narrow aisle will only impact the range and the dishwasher beside it.
My passage aisle will be 40". I am even thinking of putting the island on wheels so it can be adjusted slightly, but that means I'd have to forgo the rock countertops.

I'd like to see pictures of kitchens with narrow islands and/or aisles, and comments from the owners as to functionality. I realize that the countertops will have to overhang the cabinets so I may shorten the cabinets to 23" depth- wasy to do with either Ikea or custom cabinets.

I foolishly copied this picture without noting whose it is! I would very much like to know what kind of wood it is and what kind of finish (and any other helpful information). Any help is appreciated!

Anyone have a less than 3' wide rectangular island?

posted by: redroze on 01.05.2009 at 09:41 pm in Kitchens Forum

If you read my previous post, my in-laws want to fit an island in their kitchen. The only way we can fit in a rectangular island AND fit in the required aisle space (36" at minimum), is to do a skinnier island - maybe 2.5' or 2.75' wide. Does anyone have an island of this width? How do you like it?

Is my kitchen too narrow for an island?

posted by: cedarburgcapecod on 09.04.2013 at 01:16 pm in Kitchens Forum

We are slowly working on redoing the layout of our long and narrow eat-in kitchen. The overall dimensions are 10' 7" x 28' 2". The working part of the kitchen is 10' 7" x app 14'. At our old house I had a small 4'x3' island that I used for prep and eating space and I can't tell you how much I miss it! I've read that one needs at least 36" clearance around an island, so technically I could put a narrow one in, but I just don't know if it's practical? Has anyone put in an island in their narrow kitchen? Any regrets or are you happy you went that route? FWIW, I have 2 young kids who love to 'help' and at our old house I liked having them at the island "helping" while I cooked.

Matte black low maintenance countertop?

posted by: jackson2348 on 09.03.2013 at 08:24 am in Kitchens Forum

Hi all, I am looking for a matte black or very dark grey countertop. We have had leathered marron cohiba, and love the look; however it is not what I would call low maintenance. Glasses leave a noticeable ring, and every time we wipe the counter, we have to dry it or it has very noticeable streaks.

Any suggestions on a lower maintenance counter? I wanted marble, but will instead put it on the backsplash (to the ceiling!) for lower daily maintenance as well. Thanks!
