We started with a typical 1980s kitchen with a peninsula. We removed the peninsula and moved the sink. I worked hard at planning my appliance placement first, then let the shape of the island evolve. It ended up being an "L" shape and we couldn't be happier. We now have ample seating for 8. It works really really well for us - seating, flow, and workspace.
Here is the before when we first bought the house (the kitchen had an attached breakfast nook on the other side of the peninsula) and after: NOTES: <none>
