It's me again. There's a question that has been nagging me for some time now. I think I know part of the answer but only hybridizers and growers/distributors can answer the other part.

Why are there so many hostas out there, such as many of the ones in the Hosta Library, that we, the gardeners, will never see or be able to acquire?

Do they only exist in someone's backyard?
What are the reasons that some get produced and others don't?
Why do some just die out? or do they?

NOTES:

Dhaven gave a great and very specific answer. It's worth saving.
