Advice before I order these

posted by: rjlinva on 12.03.2006 at 05:59 am in Antique Roses Forum

I am looking into getting these roses. I have a rather large order with MANY very good "classics" that probably should be in any decent collection (Celsiana, Celestial, Ispahan, Semi-plena, etc). But, I'm intrigued with some others that I don't know much about. I'd love to hear the good, the bad, the ugly on these.

Deuil de Paul Fontaine (Moss)
Hippolyte (gallica)
Nevada (Moyesii)
Robert le Diable (centifolia)
Thisbe (hybrid musk)
Rose des Peintres (centifolia)
Comtesse de Lacépède (gallica)
Eugène de Beauharnais (china)

I don't spray, so I need survivors. I guess I tolerate some blackspot and some leafloss.

Robert

And more.

Here's the List and the Dilemma...Help

I'm going to give Pickering a try, and I have put together this order. I'd like to narrow it down to 20 roses. I've arranged the list of the top 20 (in no real order) and I have about 6 other roses I'm wondering whether they would be a better choice for any of the others listed in the top 20. I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks, Robert

1. Orpheline de Juillet (gallica)
2. Celsiana (damask)
3. Ispahan (damask)
4. Celestial (alba)
5. Félicité et Perpétué (rambler)
6. Nevada (Moyesii)
7. Deuil de Paul Fontaine (Moss)
8. Hippolyte (gallica)

What can you tell me about the following:

Abigail Adams
Sangerhauser Jubilaumrose
Gebruder Grimm
Grafin Esterhazy
Comtesse Riza du Parc

I'm interested in disease resistance, size in zone 6 PA, (or near there) fragrance, growth habit, and anything else you would like to add.

I've ordered these for spring planting.

TIA
Barbara

NOTES:

Check these out! The chinas might be good additons to the iBG, and SJ & GG might work for my home border. Ashdown was the source.
