View point is if I was standing in front of the range and looking main hallway. The is a banquette in the left. There is a speed oven, refrigerator and panty. From this location I now can look left and right and see our 2 fireplaces after the renovation.

Saying goodbye to our kitchen.....

posted by: katieob on 02.09.2011 at 08:28 pm in Kitchens Forum

Hi all.

I associate members with their kitchens, so here's me:
Photobucket

Sniffle Sniffle-We sold our house & closing is March 11. It's going to be very hard to leave the whole house, but the KITCHEN...well, there will be some tears. I'm also almost 8 months pregs so add the hormones and no booze. Aaagh!

I'm being dramatic since this is our choice, totally. The reason: When first married, we lived in a town we LOVED. House was my uncle's. Not willing to sell it to us, so after 3 years we bought a place in the city. Loved it in the city, but 2 kiddos later & no space, decided to go to back to the burbs. We now rent out the city condo.

Looked casually in the town we had been in & loved but it's pretty expensive & we had a bee in our bonnet to build a new, custom home. We built it in a different town, moved in, and realized soon after we'd made a mistake.

We've realized location & neighborhood is more important than the house. We "knew" that as conventional wisdom before, but convinced ourselves differently. Also, the economy kind of scared us and we would rather have less house, less mortgage, less stress. Oldest kiddo is 4, so they have not started school or anything. And, we learned a lot while building and would sort of enjoy a renovation opportunity. We'll be moving in with my Dad (who is delighted since he's been a widower for 3 years since my Mom passed away) while house hunting and I'm hoping to find a house that needs a kitchen reno....I'm thinking of changing gears & going wood island this time....too early to start posting about a hypothetical kitchen?

I think the thrill of doing another kitchen (I honestly research faucets for enjoyment) will sustain me through the upheaval. I hope.

So, anyone ever done this kind of thing? Anyone want to reassure me?

As always, thanks for reading.

Katie

Inspiring GW Kitchens

posted by: mary_in_nc on 10.24.2010 at 11:22 am in Kitchens Forum

So, I am curious, which kitchens from GW inspired you the most when you were planning and designing your own kitchen? For me, there were three: Tito's kitchen- http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2007/12/titos-kitchen.html , Collen's : http://finishedkitchens.blogspot.com/2007/12/coleen3201118s-kitchen.html, and my all time favorite GW kitchen Orchidluvr's (see below). I am looking forward to reading your responses!

Here is a link that might be useful: Orchidluvr's kitchen

White painted cabinets w/diff color paint on island??

posted by: HulaGalJ on 01.09.2011 at 01:23 pm in Kitchens Forum

This is my first posting though I have been scouring this wonderful site for weeks for information of all sorts.

Here is our situation: We are renovating the kitchen in our 1896 colonial revival house. We are most likely doing custom inset shaker cabinets in maple painted a shade of BM white. The backsplash will likely be white subway or marble mosaic tiles. With this in mind, I am thinking of painting the island a different color to provide contrast and keep the kitchen from looking too monochromatic. I thought perhaps a blueish gray or greenish gray might work, but I want to make sure my kitchen still has a vintage feel.

I've searched through the gallery and have found many people do all white or white and a stained wood, but have yet to see two different painted woods. If you have done this in your kitchen, I would love to see your photos and hear whether you are happy with your decision.

TIA,
Jen

Island preference (match cabinets or accent color)

posted by: ejbrymom on 12.30.2009 at 06:30 pm in Kitchens Forum

When you designed your kitchen did you prefer to have your island match your cabinet color or did you chose an accent color (finish) to separate it/highlight it from the rest of the kitchen?

(if you have photos to share of your island that would be appreciated) PLanning on painting cabinets white not sure if island should be the same or different (I do have black appliances and black/oak table and chair set). Thanks for answering.
