Using salvage in the garden

posted by: luvs2click on 03.14.2012 at 08:21 pm in Garden Junk Forum

Spring seems to have arrived here in Ohio already, and I'm getting in the mood to work in the gardens! I found an interesting article I thought others would enjoy reading. I like a lot of these ideas. I plan to try the container "rock garden" and also have a box of bricks with the holes in them that I picked up for free at a yard sale. I plan to plant them with hens & chicks. Enjoy!

Growing Moss

I've been more lurker than anything for a while now, but I thought this was worth sharing. My daughter sent it to me. She thought I might want to grow a moss sign. Looks pretty easy.

Spring fairy house project

posted by: nmgirl on 05.18.2012 at 01:13 am in Garden Junk Forum

I've had this birdhouse and gazebo feeder for awhile and hadn't had the time or inspiration to turn them into outdoor fairy houses. But this Spring I said I'm going to do it...and I did. Here's the results.

I wanted them to be lit at night so I partially dismantled some garden solar lights and installed them in the posts and the "big house". The lights are connected to a solar panel. You can see it's shadow to the right of the "big house" pole in the first daytime photo.

Even DH likes them. I think I accomplished something there.

Here's a neat idea for a pallet garden. I realize the link is on Facebook but it's the only one I could find...easily.

Garden Junk Container Plantings for Spring!

posted by: jeannespines on 04.28.2012 at 06:00 pm in Garden Junk Forum

I love 'galvanized' tubs & whiskey barrels ...so here's how it's going this Spring:

At my Garden Shed: Washtub w/Perennials planted w/ 'Live Forever' sedum is up & Dianthsus (sp?) ...the birdhse is one I painted some yrs ago ...& the Dutch shoes 'wintered over' ok outside w/Hen & Chicks:

Garden Shed Washtub Garden 4.12

Closeup of Dutch shoes...there's a new 'baby' in the left one:
Dutch Shoes Hen & Chicks 4.12

At the other end of garden shed, I planted up my Tipsy Buckets again...I'm hoping for good results ...here's Dusty Miller & Lobelia in bottom tub:

Tipsy bucket Bottomn 4.12

These 'Magenta' Petunias can handle cold to 28 deg ...so I planted:

And here's a full view of my Tipsy Buckets...one of my fave garden vignettes!

I'm hoping in a couple months it will look as good as it did this yr:

And here's another whiskey barrel (a new one last Fall) & it held 'water' so good all Winter that it killed my perennials I had re-planted from the old whiskey barrel that fell apart when we moved it while residing house. So DH drilled some holes for me & I've replanted w/Coral Bells & Hostas & an one annual...that's an old Corn Sheller behind it:

Happy Gardening, GJers! Jeanne S.

concrete countertops

posted by: rafor on 05.25.2012 at 05:06 pm in Garden Junk Forum

I just picked up 3 concrete countertops free on craigslist. I'm going to turn at least one of them into a potting bench.

Got pipes today to make a base for the countertop to sit on and I have an old copper vessel sink that I will fit over the small drain hole. This particular top is turned upside down in the pic. Haven't decided quite what to do with the other two. One is very Zen looking and I may just plop it in the garden. Love the slate drainboard on the third one. Might sit a tub for dirt over that opening and make a second potting bench.

Will post pics of the finished project if anyone is interested :)

Fairy Gardens

posted by: luvs2click on 06.14.2011 at 10:06 am in Garden Junk Forum

I've been super busy planting and maintaining container fairy gardens for a show I just did last weekend. Now that it's over, thought I'd share a few photos of some of the more interesting ones. There's a photo link at the bottom of this post with tons more pictures. I had so much fun doing this! (both collecting things to plant in all year round and planting them, but most of all selling them!) Arlene

Planted toolboxes

posted by: luvs2click on 06.06.2012 at 08:46 am in Garden Junk Forum

Getting ready for my show this weekend, so have been taking lots of pictures. I gathered and planted a bunch of rusty toolboxes and other junk - lunch boxes, dish drainers, boots, etc. The toolboxes have been growing for about a month and have really filled out! Lots more pictures at my flickr.com photo site linked at the bottom of this post.

Small garden pond with old hand pump

posted by: luvs2click on 05.23.2012 at 08:42 am in Garden Junk Forum

I bought this pond kit 5 or 6 years ago on fall clearance and have been moving it around in the shed ever since. Finally gave the ultimatum, it either gets put in the ground this year, or goes in the garage sale. It worked! It involved me moving LOTS of flowers (craigslist!)and my son dug the hole for us and installed the pond itself. My husband then installed the old pump and waterfall area. Lots and lots of work and lots of little glitches had to be worked out, but it finally all came together. An old friend gave this pump to my dad many moons ago. After Dad passed away, Mom gave it to me and I've always wanted to add it to a water feature. We are enjoying the pond so much - it is drawing lots of birds and other critters. It's lovely to sit on the porch and listen to. Here's a few pictures and a link if you'd like to see the installation process. Arlene

New use for an armoire

posted by: rafor on 06.01.2012 at 11:57 am in Garden Junk Forum

Don't know how many of you read other forums here, but on the decorating forum there have been several discussions about what to do with those older TV armoires now that everyone is switching to flat screens. Seems you can't give them away. I actually like them and have gotten several for free that I repurpose. I never had one that I used for a TV.

BUT: this lady did something wonderful with one.

I just picked up another free one today. Wish it had those sexy legs!
