Crazy seedling and some pics from this season

posted by: teyo on 11.06.2013 at 12:06 pm in Adenium Forum

Hi guys :)
haven't been around lately, a lot of stuff happening in the garden and all over.
but this is too exciting not to brag about just a little bit :D

this ladies and gentlemen, is a seedling that is less than 3 months old. the scale is in cm.

this is an absolute record for me, and what's more exciting there is another one in that bunch that has buds, only it is about 2 cm taller than this one. i cannot express how impatient i am to see the blooms :D

okay, if the above isn't enough for you, here are some pics from my adeniums this season, they really made a ton of progress, and some bloomed their little butts off

arabicum seedling first bloom, lovely intensive color and nice shape

a little under one year old, one of my most vigorous seedlings. unpruned, unpinched,it grows like that on its own

purple seedling

crazy bloomer, store bought cutting, ugly otherwise :D

another cuttings

fat little obesum

arabicum seedling with a lovely shape

that's it for now,i have a ton more pictures but the page will take forever to load
if you got this far, thank you and i hope you had a nice walk through my collection :)

Gnats or flies in soil

posted by: mwolfson on 11.12.2006 at 04:48 pm in House Plants Forum

I am getting little gnats or they may be small fruit flies developing in the soil of some of my houseplants. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them and prevent them?

RE: what is fish emulsion and what does it do?? (Follow-Up #1)

posted by: hopefulauthor on 05.06.2007 at 02:46 pm in House Plants Forum

Hi Tracy..Fish Emulsion is used as a fertilizer via soil or foliar spray..I buy citrus from this one woman in Fl, and we got to talking on the phone..she sprays all her citrus w/fish emulsion and swears it keeps scale at bay. So,in autumn, as a last feeding/insecticide spray, I'll mist plants using 1 capful of fish emulsion per 16oz sprayer of water. Add fish emulsion, shake bottle, spray..
They sell two types, (several brands) one is odorless..
The standard type does emit a fishy smell, but doesn't last long. The odorless is less, fragrant..LOL..
It's an organic food and won't burn roots if overfed/ by accident. Though I don't recommend overfeeding w/any fertilizer..in fact I use half the dossage manufacturer lists on container..
I alternate fish emulsion on cactus/succulents/ferns..
I recived an olive tree via mail a few yrs back, which arrived w/scale..I didn't notice it at first..But once I did, I decided to follow the woman in Fl's advice and spray w/FE..it worked fine..No scale.
But tracy, I don't use insecticides. For one, I have birds and they sometimes land on plants..I don't want to take the chance they fly on a plant sprayed w/chemicals..u know? Birds are sensitive so you really have to watch what you use around the house. Be it a cleaner or something for plants.
ARe you going to buy it? It's sometimes sold at HD, but I order online..I find it cheaper in the long run. I think www.homeharvest.com is one place. www.plumeriapeople.com another..I order from PP because I buy a speical hibiscus ferilizer there (can't find it anywhere else) so when I run low on FE I throw it in..Toni

Will fish fertilizer work against scale as well as Fish Emulsion?

posted by: mcgyvr2009i on 07.19.2013 at 02:48 pm in House Plants Forum

I bought something called Fish Fertilizer according to the product but the label said "Fish Emulsion Fertilizer." It's basically fish feces and boy does it smell like it. This is what I bought.

at Lowes.

Is this the same thing? If not, will it at least destroy the scale infestation? Thanks in advance.

I need opionions please

posted by: cghpnd on 07.10.2013 at 11:59 am in Growing under Lights Forum

Ive seen so many lights out there that it just confuses me even more. I've seen the t5 and t8 lights at walmart that I've seen people mention. There are 3 kind for each of the 2 lights. Cool, warm and kitchen. They were fairly inexpensive.

Then there is this one I am providing in the link. Went to home depot and they have a much larger selection. So confusing.

I have a 5 tier shelving unit. The basic wire one. I do plan to utilize all the shelves. Nothing too fancy. I was just going to do a short list of plants but I have changed my mind. I have been given quite a few succulents and the can not stay outside for winter. I'm trying to prepare ahead of time.

The natural light coming through the window now will be greatly reduced come winter. I was planning on putting the unit by the window. Is that ok with using the lighting?

Just some plants I have that need the light are spider, wandering jew, peporomia k.,Peporomia pixie, pineapple, succulents.maybe a few herbs...And of course ill be starting seeds inside as well further into winter.

Sorry its so much. The 1st advice I was given was to get led but like I said ive increased my list. Thanks in advance. Im still learning whats what and how to do things :)

Here is a link that might be useful: grow light

HAVE: way too many plants!

posted by: FrugalFanny on 03.12.2013 at 07:20 pm in House Plants Forum

Hello Gardenweb! As spring is beginning to spring here in the Northeast, I am getting excited to do some exchanging! I haven't ever taken part in an exchange before, just FYI, so I may need some help along the way with the logistics.

PLEASE READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE CONTACTING ME FOR TRADES! Thank you:)

I have many too many plants and need to thin down my growing collection. Therefore, I prefer to trade many plants for few or possibly none at all. That means you get a good deal!

The purpose of this posting is to see if there is any interest out there for things I have to offer so I can get an idea of what I need to do to prepare for a trade. Actual timing of the trade will depend on both weather and my current location, as I work seasonally and am currently waiting to see what I'll be up to (and where) for the Spring and Summer. That is why I'm doing this post ahead of time to give myself a chance to pull everything together.

My collection is spread across two locations: Western NY and in Vermont, but I have multiples of many of my plant species at both locations. Others are located only at one or the other location, so I will need a heads up from folks who are interested so I can grab those plants when I travel back and forth.

NOW FOR THE PLANTS/CUTTINGS AVAILABLE:

I am confident in the majority of my IDs, and will let you know otherwise.

I have a lot of:

Chlorophytum comosum aka Spider Plant (both plain green and reg. variegated)

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana cuttings (various colors)

Sansevieria babies (various cultivars and growing habits)

Rhoeo/Tradescantia spathacea (aka Moses in the Cradle) cuttings, most rather etiolated but still viable

Holiday cactus cuttings (rooted and unrooted; these include true Schlumbergera x buckleyi Christmas Cactus)

There are also:

African violets (various)

Agave parryi pups (aka Artichoke agave; a few small ones about 2-4" across)

Crassula ovata (some cuttings, some plantlets from leaves, most very small)

Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi (purple scallops)

AND MANY MORE! If I find anything else that I have in excess, I will follow up with more posts. Also feel free to view my exchange page for details and many more possibilities, as well as things I am interested in trading for.

Right now, top on my WANTED list are:

Sans. 'gold flame' and 'black star'
Selenicereus anthonyanus (Ric rac cactus)
Chlorophytum x fire flash
Billbergia nutans aka Queen's Tears
Small agaves appropriate for indoor growing (that I do not have)
Gasteria or gasteria-aloe hybrids (small ones) (I do not have any of these yet)
Callisia fragrans (do I really want to get myself into this?? maybe I do...)

More on exchange page.

Please contact me via this post or email with any questions or interest. I am happy to send/post photos if you like.

Sorry this post is so long, but I want to be clear from the get-go.

Happy Spring! (almost...)

FF
